SUN MICROSYSTEMS CONTINUES ITS DOMINANCE IN THE RISC/UNIX SERVER MARKET IN THE
ASEAN & INDIA REGION WITH FIVE CONSECUTIVE QUARTERS OF MARKET SHARE INCREASES
Sun grows its revenue market share in the RISC/Unix server segment by an
impressive 17 percentage points year-on-year in Q3 CY2002
Sun Microsystems, Asia South announced that based on IDC's (International Data
Corporation) Q3 2002 Enterprise Server Tracker Report, it was the dominant
vendor in the RISC/Unix server segment in ASEAN & India garnering more than
half the total market in unit shipment and revenue terms in Q3 CY2002. In addition,
Sun's revenue market share was more than twice the share of its closest competitor
in Q3 CY2002.
According to IDC's report, Sun's revenue market share in the region rose to
54.6% in Q3 CY2002, an impressive 17 percentage points increase compared to Q3
CY2001. In comparison to the previous quarter, Q2 CY2002, Sun recorded almost 10
percentage points increase in revenue market share.
The achievement in revenue market share follows five consecutive quarters of
market share increases during which Sun's revenue market share increased from
37.2% in Q2 CY2001 to 54.6% in Q3 CY2002.
In unit shipment terms, Sun's market share of 73.3% in Q3 CY 2001 is nothing
short of commanding. These results are indicative of Sun's continued leadership
in the RISC/Unix server market in ASEAN and India.
The ASEAN & India region (Asia South) comprises of six countries, namely
Singapore, Malaysia, India, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia for the
purpose of this release. In addition, Sun leads the RISC/Unix server segment in
terms of revenue market shares in five out of the six countries in the ASEAN &
India region in Q3 CY2002.
"Sun had an outstanding start to its new fiscal year," said Rajnish Arora,
Senior Program Manager, Enterprise Servers & Workstations, IDC Asia/Pacific.
"Although key wins in the telecom segment dominated its success, Sun experienced
significant success in the finance, manufacturing and government segments across
most markets in the region."
"From Sun's growing market shares in this region, it's obvious that customers
are choosing Unix and more importantly, Sun's award-winning SPARC/Solaris
platform. These results are especially encouraging in view of the current
challenging economic climate," said Lionel Lim, Vice President and Managing
Director, Sun Microsystems, Asia South. "Large enterprises are choosing our Sun
Fire servers to power their mission-critical data centers. This sets the stage
for the implementation of our N1 (Network 1) architecture which will virtualize
the resources of a data center, including network, compute and storage
elements, into a single system of resources for simpler management, better
efficiency and flexibility. In other words reducing costs and improving business
agility," he added.
