India's competitiveness in the field of IT will depend heavily on the availability of quality manpower that is trained in specific technology domains and skills, possessing extensive experience and also familiar to the best software development process methodologies. The human resource development objectives within the company have become more challenging given that they have to be managed within an ever-shrinking training budget in light of the recessionary trends in the industry.

For instance, the HRD department of a software company will be asked to staff a project team with professionals that have mobile wireless domain expertise, with knowledge in XML and familiarity in interfacing with cellular data networks to develop a workflow system that should be capable of scaling up to 2 million customers within 6 months. During the entire 3-year MCA programme, students will have the opportunity to participate in live projects, earn a stipend depending upon their performance, and will become industry-ready by gaining the relevant technology expertise, domain expertise and other skills, so that industry can immediately absorb them into projects by the time they graduate".

FUTURE PLANS

The KGISL-IIM has already initiated discussions with leading universities in the country to sponsor PhDs in the field of Software Engineering. A Postgraduate Diploma in IT-enabled Services (ITeS) and an MBA in Hospital management system in collaboration with KG Hospital, a leading multi-specialty hospital in the community, are on the anvil for the academic year 2003-2004. KGISL-IIM will also offer language courses in Japanese, and German to enable them to find opportunities in those countries.
