Michael A. Carter, Sr elected Chairman of Day Spa Association Board

Entrepreneur Michael A. Carter, Sr. has recently been elected to the Board of the Day Spa Association, promoting a standard of quality and unity within the day spa industry in America.

(PRWEB) April 23, 2006 -- In their 2006 election, The Day Spa Association’s Board of Advisors has elected Mr. Michael A. Carter, C.E.O and owner of Athena Health Club and Day Spa in Nashville, TN to be their chairman. According to Ms. Hannelore R. Leavy, Founder and Executive Director of the organization, her nomination of Mr. Carter was because of his dedication and compassion for the industry.

“The U.S. day spa industry has experienced double digit growth over the last five years. There are more than 7,000 day spas and the majority of new and existing day spas have come into existence as the result of the transformation from beauty/skin care salons. It is critically important that as our industry moves forward we must clearly articulate and communication to the public in which we serve what to expect when they have true day spa experience” stated Carter in a recent interview. The guidelines of a true day spa are outlined clearly online at www.dayspaassociation.com .

These include:

  • A clean, safe, calming and nurturing environment
  • Private treatment rooms for each client receiving a personal service
  • Showering and changing facilities for women and men
  • Spa robes and shoes for all sizes
  • Business licenses; professional, licensed estheticians and therapists on staff
  • Professional spa products for which estheticians and therapists have received training in their use

  • Optional:

Ms. Leavy further noted that Michael Carter’s recognition of the importance an industry association plays in not only representing it’s members’ interests, but the association’s needs for the full support of its members in order to be effective in its mission.

“We are grateful to Mr. Michael A. Carter for accepting this position to assist us in streamlining the activities of The Day Spa Association. We are confident that with his leadership, the DSA will strengthen its role within the day spa community,” adds Leavy.

Michael A. Carter, Sr. comes to the Day Spa Industry first, as a client. His life has been highlighted with several successful business titles, including his last corporate position before the launch of Athena Health Club and Day Spa, as the Director of Marketing and Government Affairs with Anthem Alliance, a U.S. Department of Defense Health Care Contractor based in Indianapolis, Indiana. Upon ‘retirement’ he and his wife, Pamela, also a successful business person, chose to fulfill a lifelong dream of living in Europe. Two years in Waterloo, Belgium created a desire for two things. First, the discovery of the European Day Spa experience made a lasting impression. There was little in their experience to equal what they found in the spas of Europe, back home in America.

Secondly, as a competitive swimmer and strong fitness proponent, Michael made sure that the requirement of an inside pool and fitness equipment were available in his home. Soon the word spread of Michael’s gift of unique swimming techniques and his fitness programs, and created a demand for his teaching of area students in Waterloo at his home. This ‘retirement hobby’ became a seven day a week job. Michael Carter found his joy and returned to America in search of the perfect place to create what he’d come to love…a beautiful European Day Spa at home in the States.

After literally a year of research, the upscale area of Brentwood, TN provided the launching pad for Athena Health Club and Day Spa, a 15,000 square foot oasis, with a $3.5 million build-out to create one of the most inviting, calming, rejuvenating “true” day spas, and the largest in Middle Tennessee. Enlisting the help of his accountant of 25 years Louise Ratts, and successful fitness club managers Vicky Hilliard and Pamela Spradlin, Michael Carter has seen two years of unprecedented growth. They are in the final stages of a second launch of an expansion at a new location which will provide services that the Athena client demands, yet didn’t fit with the ‘day spa’ definition. In June 2006, the Athena Salon and Image Center at a near-by Brentwood location will offer hair services, manicures, pedicures, fashion/imaging, and a business service division that offers graphics, photography, video services, and a host of perks unique to the recording artist client, a demographic that is abundant in the Nashville/Brentwood area. This synergistic approach under the Athena umbrella begins and ends with the goal of one thing: premium service.

Athena Health Club and Day Spa is moving into areas of unique services including corporate wellness, ashiatsu, jahara, and a full nutritional program designed by Monica Coote to promote detoxification of the body.

As well as serving as the new Chairman of the Day Spa Association, Michael A. Carter, Sr. also serves on the Middle Tennessee United Way Board of Trustees, Nashville State Community College Foundation Board of Trustees, Nashville Chamber of Commerce Board of Governors, The Brentwood Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and The Middle Tennessee Council Boy Scouts of America Board of Directors.
