National Boss Day Ideal Time to Say Thanks
Monday, Oct. 16, marks the 49th annual celebration of National Boss Day throughout the United States.
Hurst, TX (PRWEB) October 14, 2006 -– Within the shadow of Labor Day on the corporate calendar is National Boss Day, October 16, when a growing number of people in companies and organizations throughout the United States say thanks to the people in supervisory positions.
Established in 1958 by Patricia Haroski, an administrative assistant from Illinois who thought bosses weren’t being given proper recognition for helping make better workplace environments, National Boss Day has steadily gained momentum in the intervening years.
One reason may be the evolution of management styles more prevalent in the workplace today than five decades ago. Today’s supervisors are more likely to be coaches, mentors and team leaders who help subordinates develop new skills and manage their own careers.
And they are more likely to be women. U.S. Department of Labor statistics show a steady rise of women in supervisory positions. Of the slightly more than 49 million people in management, professional and related positions, just over half are women, up from 40 percent two decades ago.
“Employee surveys consistently demonstrate that one of the key elements of job satisfaction is a positive relationship with a person’s supervisor,” Keith Riewe, co-owner of Bice’s Florist, said. “We’re pleased to see more and more people recognizing their bosses with gifts of cards and flowers, taking them to lunch and just pausing to say thanks.”
Riewe says online shopping now make it easy to recognize bosses with a range of gifts, including fruit baskets, gourmet baked goods, spa certificates, sports gift sets and many others leading florists such as Bice’s now offer. “Flowers are always appropriate, but now you can really get creative,” Riewe said.
