U.K. (PRWEB) November 18, 2006 -- While many dog owners consider relaxing on the sofa an enjoyable past time the ramifications for dogs is completely different. Due to the increase in canine obesity and weight problems, Nutrecare are delighted to announce that their range of low fat dog foods has expanded.
Obesity in dogs is a serious medical problem.
According to Hill's statistics, 76% of pet owners believe their pet's weight to be 'just right', but actually, up to 50% of and dogs are overweight. "Obesity among pets is one of the most significant nutritional problems seen by veterinarians,' stated Dr. Dennis Jewell, a companion animal nutrition expert at Hill's Pet Nutrition. This view is not exclusive to animal health manufacturers, a survey from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) found that over four fifths of animal physiotherapists cited obesity as the number one problem facing dogs in the UK.
In light of this, many pet food manufacturers have brought out versions of their food that are low in fat and calories but contain high levels of fibre to help the dog feel full and satisfied after a meal. In addition to this, these 'complete' foods, such as Royal Canin's Obesity veterinary diet and Hill's Prescription Diet Canine R/D, provide the dog with balanced nutrition with vitamins and minerals to keep all the dog's body systems functioning properly.
In 2002 a study by Purina Petcare showed that the group of dogs who had a controlled food intake lived up to 15% or two years longer than the dogs who were allowed free access to food for 15 minutes a day.
Sadly, in recent times, obesity in humans has increased too and now, 22% of the British population are deemed obese with up to three quarters of people being overweight. In fact, a BBC website states that over 30,000 deaths in the UK are attributed to obesity.
However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. The People and Pets Exercising Together (P-PET) study by Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Hill's Pet Nutrition showed that people and their pets are more successful at staying in a weight loss programme when they exercise together. 'People love their pets and don't want to let them down,' said Dr. Jennifer Jellison, Practicing Veterinarian. 'They also want their pets to live long and healthy lives.' Dogs were fed Hill's Prescription Diet Canine R/D and took exercise with their owners at recommended levels. This combination had remarkable results.
Practical advice is provided on the Nutrecare website, 'How to detect if my dog is overweight' also 'What to do with my overweight dog' as well as the recently extended range of Royal Canin and Hill's prescription diet wet and dry foods.
