ChocolateWarsArchive.com Tells Story Behind America's Famous Chocolate Makers

Newspaper archive reveals the competitive history between Hershey and Mars.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa (PRWEB) March 16, 2007 -- NewspaperARCHIVE.com, the largest newspaper database available online, has just released ChocolateWarsArchive.com, a free newspaper archive that describes the history of chocolate in America and documents the battle between the Hershey and Mars Corporations. The archive is being released in conjunction with Lou Reda Productions' one-hour documentary entitled "Chocolate Wars," which will be shown Tuesday, April 3 at 8 p.m. EST on the Discovery Times Channel.

Newspapers found within ChocolateWarsArchive.com detail the history of Frank Mars and Milton Hershey, the founders of America's famous chocolate companies. Through these rare newspapers, provided by NewspaperARCHIVE.com, along with other footage, photographs and interviews, the "Chocolate Wars" documentary explores the history of America's favorite guilty pleasure.

"You wouldn't normally describe the relationship between two chocolate makers as a war, but Hershey and Mars have been competing over the American candy market since the 1930s," said Greg Hollingsworth, researcher for the Chocolate Wars Archive. "The two companies even battled over who would provide chocolate-based rations to soldiers serving in Operation Desert Storm."

The Chocolate Wars Archive features more than a thousand historical newspaper pages that are easily searchable by keyword or date. For example, researchers may find articles about the man who invented the Hershey candy bar by typing in "Milton Hershey" under the Advanced Search. A number of articles about Hershey's death can be found by further limiting this search to the year 1945. The archive also provides a timeline of events that impacted Hershey and Mars, as well as a short history of the American candy industry.

ChocolateWarsArchive.com is just one of more than 20 free archives provided by NewspaperARCHIVE.com. Other archives include OutlawArchive.com, CollegeBasketballArchive.com, AIDSArchive.com and EarthquakeArchive.com. NewspaperARCHIVE.com is owned by Heritage Microfilm and began in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1999.

Lou Reda Productions of Easton, Pennsylvania, is one of the leading non-fiction filmmakers in the United States. In the 30 years since its founding, Lou Reda has created more than 400 programs for cable and network television.
