New Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA Honored with 2007 Building Brooklyn Award

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce honored the new Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA as a winner of the 2007 Building Brooklyn Awards Competition, for its positive impact on the borough's economy and quality of life. Opened in February 2007, the new Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA addition nearly doubled the YMCA's size, exemplifying the YMCA's long-term commitment to renovating and rebuilding its current facilities while expanding into new service areas.

Brooklyn, NY (PRWEB) July 19, 2007 -- The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce honored the new Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA as a winner of the 2007 Building Brooklyn Awards Competition, at a ceremony last night at the Brooklyn Navy Yards. The annual Building Brooklyn Awards recognizes recently completed construction projects that have had a positive impact on the borough's economy and quality of life.

"We are proud to be recognized by the Chamber as an important addition to the Brooklyn community," said Jack Lund, President & CEO of the YMCA of Greater New York. "While the YMCA has been serving this area of Brooklyn since 1889, the Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA is one of our proudest examples of reinforcing our commitment to helping the kids and families of Brooklyn grow strong in spirit, mind and body."

We are proud to be recognized by the Chamber as an important addition to the Brooklyn community
Opened in February 2007, the new Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA addition nearly doubled the YMCA's size, exemplifying the YMCA's long-term commitment to renovating and rebuilding its current facilities while expanding into new service areas. The new facility replaced the Y's 1905 structure at the corner of Bedford & Gates, and is annexed to the YMCA Activity Center, which is currently being remodeled. The Bed-Stuy Y serves more than 6,500 children and 4,000 adults in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brownsville, Clinton Hill, Crown Heights and Fort Greene.

"The Bed-Stuy Y has been an instant hit with Brooklynites, because it gives thousands of residents of every age and background a place to exercise, play, and learn that's close to home or work at an affordable rate, while also continuing the tradition of providing the guidance and sense of community the Y is known for -- especially for our children -- to help them succeed in today's world," said Borough President Marty Markowitz. "That's why now more than ever, in Brooklyn we say the 'Y' stands for 'yes.'"

An independent, eight-member panel of Brooklyn-based architects, planners, economic development experts and city officials selected the winning projects. Projects were judged on a list of criteria including: overall aesthetic and design, positive economic impact, improving the quality of life, providing critical neighborhood services and amenities, demonstrating a commitment to quality design and pre-existing architectural character, and demonstrating an aesthetic sensitivity to the surrounding community. Downtown Brooklyn's Dodge YMCA won the Chamber's award in 2006.

The YMCA isn't finished growing in Brooklyn. This January, Markowitz joined Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Councilmember Domenic M. Recchia, Jr., YMCA president & CEO Jack Lund and other community leaders in announcing a new 40,000 square-foot YMCA in Coney Island, as part of a $56 million community development partnership. The Coney Island project is part of the YMCA's Here Comes the Neighborhood! campaign, which will also build new YMCAs in Ridgewood and the Rockaways in Queens. The Coney Island project looks to break ground in early- to mid-2008.

The YMCA of Greater New York is a community service organization which promotes positive values through programs that build spirit, mind and body, welcoming all people, with a focus on youth. Supported in part through contributions to the Strong Kids Campaign, the YMCA provides membership assistance and scholarships to programs like summer camp, child care and teen activities, so that no one is turned away due to an inability to pay.
