Red Shirt Entertainment Presents “Defacing Michael Jackson” at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe
New York, NY (PRWEB) October 03, 2013 -- Red Shirt Entertainment, the dynamic, culturally-driven production company based out of Midtown Manhattan is announcing the launch of its Off-Off Broadway work Defacing Michael Jackson. The project marks the first time that Red Shirt will be producing a play featuring multiple performances. It will be premiering on Friday, November 1 at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in New York’s East Village.
“This is a monumental step as Red Shirt continues to solidify itself as a force on the New York theater scene,” said Red Shirt Producing Artistic Director Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj. “Additionally, the theme of the play aligns perfectly with Red Shirt’s commitment to producing culturally relevant, socially conscious work.”
Set in rural, 1984 Florida, a group of African-American teenagers creates their own Michael Jackson fan club. However, when a white family moves into their neighborhood with a child intent on joining, rules of the community as a whole are challenged and changed. The play tests perceptions of race, growing up, and hero worship.
“I'm so honored and excited to dive into this story with Red Shirt,” said show playwright Aurin Squire. “As a child, Michael Jackson was my hero. He felt the pain and anger of life, while losing none of the beauty. I think he's the epitome of the Black experience, the American dream, and the tragic heroes of ancient mythology.”
Squire is currently a member of the Lila Acheson Wallace American Playwrights Program at Julliard.
“Since 2011 Red Shirt has made a name for itself by offering unique, one-of-a-kind performances to its audience,” said Red Shirt Executive Producer Frank O’Brien. “Defacing Michael Jackson is no exception. The edgy, yet relatable subject matter will certainly keep the audience engaged while wondering what will happen next.”
