CityLink and NoviFlow Sign Agreement to Create the First SDN-based Internet Exchange in the World
Montreal, QC, Canada (PRWEB) November 14, 2013 -- NoviFlow Inc., a leading provider of high-performance OpenFlow-based switching solutions, today announced an agreement with CityLink, the leading operator of New Zealand’s Internet Exchange Points, to supply the company with software-defined networking (SDN) equipment. The equipment will be deployed in Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) around the country of New Zealand, making CityLink the first company in the world to implement an SDN-based Internet Exchange.
CityLink group chief technology officer Jamie Baddeley said that “…the agreement is the conclusion of an exhaustive set of tests of key SDN switching vendors that has taken place at CityLink over the last 12 months. We have very exacting requirements when it comes to SDN and the IXPs. NoviFlow clearly demonstrated their capability and commitment to very high performance software-defined networking and because of that we’re innovating the future architecture of Internet Exchange Points with them.”
According to Dominique Jodoin, president and chief executive officer of NoviFlow: “Up until today, the idea of an SDN-based Internet Exchange was merely a vision. Our pioneering work in the New Zealand market with leading innovator CityLink is turning that vision into a reality.” He adds: “NoviFlow is very pleased that our OpenFlow 1.3 compliant switches will be a key element in CityLink's implementation of SDN into their network. We are confident that we are one of the only SDN companies in the market today capable of delivering the capacity and performance needed by intensive leading-edge applications, like those deployed by CityLink."
This evolution of the IXP architecture with SDN technology (SDX) is centered on delivering a more secure, stable, and visualized Internet Exchange Point in New Zealand. The use of SDN enables CityLink to implement an automated traffic forwarding policy, offering 100% predictable behavior and better compliance with Internet Engineering Taskforce (IETF) best current practice recommendation 38 amongst other things. This approach is the first of its type in the world, with all IXP architectures worldwide facing similar challenges.
