Directed and Produced by Andrew Johner, “Electronic Awakening” investigates the spirituality of Electronic Dance Music culture. Featuring footage with Daniel Pinchbeck, Alex Grey, Terence McKenna, Ken Kesey, Erik Davis, and Starhawk, this DVD is an ethnographic documentary film exploring the international "rave" phenomenon not as a party scene but as a reemergence of shamanic ritual. Showcasing the transcendental, spiritual, and communal effects of electronic dance music (EDM) events, Electronic Awakening strips away the common associations of drugs and hedonism, and demonstrates how the culture has evolved over the years into one that is conscious and sacred.
In addition to interviewing people whose lives and minds were forever changed by their transcendent, we-are-all-one experiences on the dance floor, producer/director and anthropologist AC Johner ponders the cause of this mind-altering effect and suggests that the repetitive, mathematically perfect rhythms and oscillations of EDM have the power to create a communal "hive mind." Because more and more people are having this experience, he suggests, we could be on the verge of a mass transformation--one that would take humanity off the path of self-destruction and lead a new age of peace and harmony on Earth. The film includes music from The Crystal Method, Shpongle, Bird of Prey, Nadis Warriors, Govinda and Phutureprimitive, to name a few. By combining cutting-edge 3D motion graphics, insightful interviews and an underground electronic music soundtrack, the film offers a multi-layered experience of this worldwide phenomenon. Thanks to North Atlantic Books and Random House, the new DVDs are now available on Barnes & Noble and Amazon, visit website for more information.
Keyframe-Entertainment is also pleased to announce the launch of the third episode of “The Bloom Series” titled “Ways Of The Sacred.” The third chapter of the series examines the festivals’ role in the revival of a sense of mythos for its participants that they feel is a component of the ritual experience. Combined, these elements contribute to their experience of the “sacred” through an embracing community without fixed dogmas. Keyframe has supported The Bloom Series by joining as Executive Producer of the third episode and Screening Director of all episodes. Created by Jeet-Kei Leung and Akira Chan, The Bloom is a 4-episode documentary web series that documents the growing influence of Transformational Festivals throughout the world. Its mission is to explore the festival culture’s history while highlighting its core values of community, creativity, understanding, and empowerment of participants as part of a supporting network. Subsequently, the documentary shows the ways that the values inherent in these festivals are then used in different contexts to promote awareness and contribute to a better world.
