New Means of Staying Active While Studying Championed at Iowa State University
Ames, IA (PRWEB) December 18, 2013 -- The state of Iowa has implemented a challenge to its citizens to become the healthiest state in the nation within the next four years. Iowa State University is an integral player in this quest to explore creative measures to improve citizen’s individual health. This week, the Des Moines Register labeled Iowa State’s ‘ExererCYse is Medicine’ campaign “an offshoot of a global effort by the American College of Sports Medicine” with a very visible tool to get students moving: the TrekDesk Treadmill Desk.
The Register reported that Iowa State has enlisted the efforts of more than 250 students (approximately one fourth of the University’s kinesiology undergrads) as student “activity ambassadors” helping to implement a variety of methods to get people moving again. Having used TrekDesk Treadmill Desks in a previous study, they are now being placed in strategic high traffic public areas to encourage the idea of walking while studying/working. Student ambassadors also set an example by using the TrekDesk and posting photos on social media sites in an attempt to influence and educate others that there are creative options available to change a normally sedentary task to an opportunity for activity. “Students have a lot of work to do that usually requires them to be sedentary. This way, you can avoid sitting all day and still get some school work done. It’s walking slow, getting the blood moving and avoiding all that sedentary time,” stated student ambassador Karissa Peyer to the Register.
Since 2008, TrekDesk Treadmill Desk’s Movement Revolution has sought to raise the awareness of the American public regarding the health hazards of sitting and the benefits of staying in motion during the day. “I am certain that we will look back years from now and understand that Iowa State’s research contributions and their ambassador's utilization of social media as an educational tool was an integral part of changing the mindset in America regarding the importance of movement and the health hazards of sedentary lifestyles. We are excited that we are able to assist them in their efforts,” stated TrekDesk Treadmill Desk CEO Steve Bordley.
Designed to fit any existing treadmill, TrekDesk treadmill desk is an affordable, full sized, height adjustable workstation that allows individuals the opportunity to gain the necessary amount of daily exercise to lose weight, maintain health, reduce stress, prevent disease, strengthen muscles, boost mood and productivity, without requiring additional time during the day or extra motivation.
