Limited Brands Recognized By National Domestic Violence Hotline For 10 Years Of Continued Support; Program Gives Hope to Hundreds of Thousands of Women in Shelters
(PRWEB) July 16, 2013 -- The National Domestic Violence Hotline (NDVH) is celebrating a 10 year history of generous support totaling nearly $540,000 from the Limited Brands Foundation. This year’s gift of $50,000 to NDVH will allow the non-profit organization to facilitate The Giving Tree program and to answer calls from domestic violence victims and their friends and family members. Every day of the week, 24 hours a day, NDVH has highly trained expert advocates available to talk confidentially with anyone affected by domestic violence. The organization provides callers with lifesaving tools and immediate support to enable victims to find safety and live their lives free of abuse.
In The Giving Tree program, twice a year, NDVH reaches out to more than 1,700 domestic violence shelters across the United States and connects them to the local Limited Brands stores including Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works. The stores’ employees spearhead a donation campaign that provides gifts to abused women who utilize the shelters. Often having to leave their homes in a hurry, these women frequently find they only have the clothes on their backs when they arrive at a shelter. One shelter client who received donated items from a participating Victoria’s Secret store shared this with the organization:
“I thought there would not be such nice things at a shelter. I can’t believe people care enough to do this… I had to leave so much behind when I left my abuser. I always wanted a matching bra and panty.” – Women’s shelter client
“Limited Brands is grateful that we have been able to support the National Domestic Violence Hotline and the vital work they do for those struggling with domestic abuse,” said Janelle Simmons, associate vice president of community relations and philanthropy for Limited Brands. “We are committed to supporting community programs that focus on the health and empowerment of women. Not only do the women in these shelters benefit from the work done by NDVH, but our employees’ lives are greatly enriched by the opportunity to uplift the women’s spirits.”
“This tradition has brought countless blessings to so many families impacted by domestic violence who find themselves in a shelter during Mother’s Day or the Christmas holiday season,” said Katie Ray-Jones, National Domestic Violence Hotline president. Since its beginning, The Giving Tree project has benefited hundreds of thousands of women and children through local donations from Limited Brands Foundation. Ray-Jones continues, “One domestic violence victim who received a gift from a local Victoria Secret store claimed, ‘I feel loved for once in my life.’ This is why we are so grateful to Limited Brands and want to thank them for their long-standing partnership that creates such a lasting and positive impact.”
