North Fork to Celebrate Tribal Culture at 43rd Annual Indian Fair Days and Pow Wow
North Fork, CA (PRWEB) July 22, 2013 -- This small mountain community located at the exact geographic center of California will be celebrating its rich tribal history the first weekend in August at the 43rd annual Indian Fair Days and Pow Wow.
North Fork is home to many of the members of the Mono tribe. The mono people have lived in the Sierra Nevada and surrounding areas for centuries. Their long-lived customs will be showcased for all to see during the annual event taking place at the North Fork Recreation Center.
Members of the North Fork Mono tribe as well as members of other Mono tribes throughout the region, plus Miwok and Maidu tribal members also attend the event, each one showcasing their unique cultures.
In addition to traditional dancing, there will be food, native craft vendors, basket demonstrations and a hand game tournament. The gates open at 9 am with the grand entry taking place at noon on both Saturday, August 3 and Sunday, August 4.
The event is put on by the Sierra Mono Indian Museum in North Fork, one of the few tribally owned and operated museums in the country. The museum houses an impressive display of tribal art and cultural artifacts as well as exhibits showcasing the diverse wildlife in the area.
