Allied Environmental Services, Inc. Ends Mercury Recycling Program
Lima, Ohio (PRWEB) July 24, 2013 -- In March 2011, Allied launched an Ohio state-wide mercury recycling program for the purpose of providing a safe means of collecting and recycling unneeded mercury from residential and academic sources. While a small fee was applied to offset transportation costs, the processing and recycling of mercury was offered free of charge.
Allied recently announced the discontinuation of the residential mercury recycling program. According to Chad Reynolds, Allied Business Development Director, the rising costs associated with the collection, transport and processing of mercury, made the complimentary program unsustainable. “Allied is a privately owned business and the operation of the mercury recycling program was made possible by time and labor donated by our employees, which kept the program cost-neutral. However, the financial burden could no longer be offset,” stated Reynolds.
During the past two years, Allied worked in conjunction with many county and city Emergency Management Agencies, Departments of Health, Fire Departments, Schools, Universities and Local Emergency Planning Committees to arrange for the safe collection, transportation and recycling of mercury. The program successfully collected and safely removed over 600 pounds of elemental mercury and mercury-containing devices from Ohio’s communities. “The mercury program was successful and achieved its goal by removing a significant quantity of mercury from communities. We would like to thank all those that participated in the program,” Reynolds added.
Allied continues to offer mercury collection/disposal/recycling as part of its larger Hazardous Materials Management services; however, mercury management will longer be offered free of charge. According to Reynolds, the fees associated with mercury management will be dependent on existing market conditions. The Allied office should be contacted at (419) 227-4004 for pricing prior to scheduling a collection event. Customers are asked not to transport mercury or mercury-containing devices to the Allied offices prior to scheduling an appointment.
