Manhattan College To Host Women’s Lecture Series
RIVERDALE, N.Y., (PRWEB) August 28, 2013 -- Manhattan College welcomes authors Carol Gilligan and Lauren Weisberger, veteran and Olympian Melissa Stockwell, and television personality Michelle Beadle to campus this semester as part of its Women’s Lecture Series. The four women will present their professional stories to the College community, and the series will commence on Sept. 9 with Carol Gilligan.
The Women’s Lecture Series is part of Manhattan College’s yearlong celebration of 40 years of coeducation at Manhattan, which is sponsored by the Dean of Students Civility Project. The College will announce additional lectures for the spring semester in the coming months.
The schedule of discussions for the fall semester include:
o Monday, Sept. 9: Author, feminist and professor Carol Gilligan will launch the series and share her professional experience publishing her 1982 book, "In a Different Voice," which focuses on gender studies. Harvard University Press called the book, “the little book that started a revolution,” and Gilligan held the first chair position in gender studies at Harvard University. She is currently a professor at New York University.
o Tuesday, Sept. 10: The New York Times bestselling author Lauren Weisberger will visit campus and discuss her famed book "The Devil Wears Prada" and growing career. Starting with her first job as the assistant to Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour and the inspiration for "The Devil Wears Prada," Weisberger’s writing career has thrived with "Everyone Worth Knowing," "Last Night at Chateau Marmont," and "Chasing Harry Winston" also making The New York Times bestselling list.
o Tuesday, Oct. 1: Military veteran Melissa Stockwell will address the community and tell how she recovered from losing a limb from a roadside bomb in Iraq to becoming an Olympian. First competing as swimmer in the 2008 Paralympic Games, she moved over to participating in paratriathlons and has won multiple national and international titles.
o Wednesday, Oct. 2: Television-personality Michelle Beadle will conclude the series with a brief conversation highlighting her career as co-host of NBC’s "Access Hollywood." In addition, Beadle spent time as co-host of "SportsNation" on ESPN2 alongside Colin Cowherd, and also was previously the NY SportsCenter anchor for ESPN Radio 1050 New York’s "The Michael Kay Show."
The Sept. 9 event with Carol Gilligan will be held at 6 p.m. in Smith Auditorium, and the Sept. 10 and Oct. 1 and 2 lectures will also take place at 6 p.m. in Hayden Hall, room 100. The local community is invited to attend the Women’s Lecture Series.
