VA Home Loan Centers First Military Mortgage Provider to Extend Financing to Same Sex Couples
San Diego, CA (PRWEB) September 17, 2013 -- VA Home Loan Centers, a privately held network of government loan specialists, announced today that it will begin offering VA (Veterans Administration) Guaranteed mortgage financing to married same sex couples. This announcement comes as a result of a recent ruling by a federal judge in California to extend spousal benefits to a married same-sex couple that had previously been reserved for veterans in opposite sex marriages. The federal ruling was made in light of the earlier U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) discriminates against same-sex couples and that the federal government must treat all married couples equally. The federal court's decision paves the way for veterans in same-sex marriages to receive benefits in any state that recognizes same-sex marriages.
One of the most popular Veterans programs is the home loan guarantee. The VA Home Loan Guarantee provides veterans with a number of advantages when compared to other mortgages including lower interest rates and zero down payment up to the county maximum. The program can be used to build a home, buy a condo, make repairs or home improvements, refinance an existing mortgage, or install energy-efficient home improvements.
According to Timothy Nash, Head Counsel of VA Home Loan Centers, "This latest ruling is an important step in helping all veterans gain access to affordable housing. We are proud to be the first military mortgage provider to begin offering mortgage financing to couples covered by these important civil rights and equal opportunity advancements."
Prior to the recent court decision, only the veteran or active duty service-member was eligible to apply for a VA Loan. Same sex couples could only apply for a VA loan if they both had the benefit or were both in the military. The new ruling applies only to married couples and does not extend benefits to those in domestic partnerships.
