Britannica Names Chris Mayland Vice President, Consumer Markets; Digital Publisher Revs Up Online Strategy for Ads, Subscriptions
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) June 04, 2014 -- Encyclopaedia Britannica today announced that it has appointed Chris Mayland vice president, consumer markets, a new position.
Mayland, a specialist in marketing and advertising strategies for digital products, will be responsible for the management of consumer subscriptions and customer service and for driving advertising revenue across a suite of desktop and mobile sites belonging to Britannica and its Springfield, Mass.-based Merriam-Webster subsidiary. He will also direct the sales and marketing of Britannica’s yearbook.
Mayland joined Britannica in 2007 as manager of advertising operations and was most recently general manager, online advertising. In that position, he was responsible for advertising revenue for Britannica and Merriam-Webster sites, and he developed a staff charged with developing advertising strategy and maximizing online ad revenue.
The evolution of Mayland’s role reflects the company’s advancing consumer strategy and increasing emphasis on what Britannica president Jorge Cauz calls the “casual learner” market, consisting of the millions of people who search for discrete and often short bits of information online, as opposed to doing in-depth research.
“Britannica and Merriam-Webster have a great deal to offer information seekers today,” said Cauz. “At a time when the Internet is awash in questionable information, we provide factual, reliable and up-to-date content created by experts, along with many opportunities for people to share their own knowledge with others. We want to make sure everyone knows about the quality of our products and how to find them, and Chris has shown us that he can make that happen.”
Mayland started his career as an account executive with the marketing and advertising agency TMP Worldwide. He later held positions with Zacks Investment Research, where he was instrumental in growing the advertising business through partnerships with other financial Web sites.
Mayland holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Vanderbilt University.
