Regan Arts to Publish Two Books with Academy Award-Nominated Actress, Author, Mental Health Awareness Advocate Mariel Hemingway
New York, NY (PRWEB) January 09, 2015 -- Regan Arts announced that they have acquired actress Mariel Hemingway’s memoir OUT CAME THE SUN: OVERCOMING THE LEGACY OF MENTAL ILLNESS, ADDICTION, AND SUICIDE IN MY FAMILY and INVISIBLE GIRL, written for young adults. The books are scheduled to publish simultaneously in April 2015 in anticipation of National Mental Health Awareness Month in May.
Hemingway will reveal in candid detail the story of her turbulent childhood in a famous family haunted by depression, alcoholism, mental illness, and suicide. Seven members of the last four generations of the Hemingway family have committed suicide—including her sister Margaux, one of the world’s top models at the time, and her grandfather, world-reknowned novelist Ernest Hemingway, who took his own life a few months before Mariel’s birth.
Hemingway recounts through her timeless wit and wisdom how her early childhood experiences affected her roles as actor, wife, mother, sister, and now as a globally-renowned keynote speaker and thought leader, focused on optimizing quality of life, especially for those who have lived with trauma, mental illness, and a legacy of suicide.
She shares never-before-told stories of her off and on Hollywood set experiences with world-class directors, writers, and actors, and reflects on how feeling “unheard” as a child set her on a path of using her voice and personal story to heal herself and those who, like her, have courageously navigated seemingly impossible circumstances.
Hemingway shines the light on the importance and impact of celebrating one’s own unique path, ensuring a way forward guided by pride, mindfulness, joy, and compassion for self and others.
While both memoirs are stories of triumphantly overcoming her family’s multifaceted demons, INVISIBLE GIRL targets a young adult audience and focuses on Hemingway’s experiences as a child living in a home where chaos was the norm and courage, humor, and connecting with the outdoors and to her beloved pet were her salvation.
Every day, millions of Americans’ lives are affected by suicide, alcoholism, or mental illness. When not working as an actor or writing, Hemingway is a tireless advocate for families dealing with mental illness. "Running from Crazy," the 2014 documentary she co-executive produced with Oprah Winfrey about her family and suicide awareness, received a Primetime Emmy nomination.
About the deeply felt meaning of the two Regan Arts releases to her, Hemingway writes: “The sun comes out when we are inspired to tell our stories. From there, we can heal our past, shift from darkness to light, from fear to triumph, and from pain to compassion for ourselves and those who we love.”
In making the announcement, Judith Regan, CEO of Regan Arts, said, “Mariel Hemingway shares her moving story of growing up in a family facing the tragedy of mental illness, alcoholism, and addiction as well as the impact on other loved ones. She offers a courageous account of developing the compassion, hope, and solutions we all need to move forward in a positive way. Regan Arts is proud to publish books that create greater awareness and understanding of the many issues surrounding addiction and mental illness.”
