Keep Mothers and Babies Together is the first biography of John Kennell, MD. With his long-time friend and colleague, Dr. Marshall Klaus, he changed the way mothers and babies were treated in the hospital. Dr. Kennell and his colleagues were the first to allow mothers to stay with their hospitalized premature babies, and conducted the initial studies on mother-infant bonding. The research they published launched the doula movement in the U.S. and around the world. The influence of Kennell's work can be seen today in statements such as the 2014 acknowledgment of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists regarding the value of doulas in the prevention of primary cesarean sections, as well the White Ribbon Alliance's Universal Rights of Childbearing Women Charter.
Dr. Kennell, Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine and Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital, passed away in August 2013. World-renowned pediatrician and colleague, Dr. T. Berry Brazelton spoke of him, "The passion which is generated and builds up in the nine months of pregnancy deserves to be enhanced and celebrated by a successful and psychologically healthy delivery to enhance the attachment between the parents and their infant, as well as between themselves. Karen Olness, MD is Professor Emerita of Pediatrics, Global Health and Diseases at Case Western Reserve University and board certified in developmental behavioral pediatrics. She has worked in resource poor areas of the world over a 50 year period with a focus on helping children in disasters. John Kennell and she worked together for 24 years.
Carolyn Myers, PhD served in the Peace Corps in Thailand. There she spent a most rewarding time in the Health Sciences in the beautiful northern city of Chiang Mai. With her doctorate in biochemistry she subsequently joined the busy Division of Pediatric Pharmacology and Critical Care at Rainbow Babies and Childrens Hospital in Cleveland Ohio. She was part of the research laboratory providing both analyses for the team investigating the pharmacology, efficacy and safety of medicines given to children and for providing laboratory experience for Critical Care Fellows. She also played a similar role at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville for two years. Following retirement Carolyn joined Karen Olness and Mary Hellerstein in completing the preparation of the biography of Dr. John Kennell.
