Computational Linguistics Expert and Entrepreneur Philip Resnik Joins FiscalNote Advisory Board
Washington, DC (PRWEB) October 28, 2015 -- FiscalNote™, provider of a real-time legal analytics platform that tracks, analyzes and forecasts legal and policy data, today announced the addition of Philip Resnik, Ph.D., a computational linguistics expert, to the company’s board of advisors. In this role, he will provide guidance on product development, particularly in regards to FiscalNote’s analysis and natural language processing capabilities.
As professor and recent director of the Computational Linguistics and Information Processing Laboratory at the University of Maryland, Resnik specializes in computational approaches to social science, is an expert in natural language processing and is widely recognized as one of the researchers who helped bring data-driven approaches to the field. His approach emphasizes finding the right balance between data-driven analysis and expert knowledge in computational modeling.
In his role as advisor, Resnik will serve as a resource during a period of tremendous growth for FiscalNote.

Outside academia, Resnik is a serial entrepreneur, with experience that includes being a technical co-founder of CodeRyte (clinical natural language processing, acquired in 2012 by 3M), lead scientist for Converseon (spearheading development of their sentiment analysis platform, now marketed as ConveyAPI), and founder of React Labs, which is commercializing his research on scalable real-time response measurement and engagement using mobile devices.
FiscalNote’s first product, Prophecy, uses legislative data from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Congress to determine legislator effectiveness and forecast policy outcomes with more than 94 percent accuracy. In 2015, the company introduced Sonar, which searches, tracks and analyzes regulations while providing analysis across comments from stakeholders; and Atlantis, a comprehensive database of state regulations that provides customized analysis and regulatory documents. The company aims to better connect organizations with government data, providing data-driven analysis to help policy and legal professionals gain valuable, actionable insights.

Resnik becomes the tenth member of the FiscalNote board of advisors. Resnik earned his bachelor's degree in Computer Science at Harvard in 1987 and his Ph.D. in Computer and Information Science at University of Pennsylvania in 1993, and joined the University of Maryland faculty in 1996. His industry experience prior to entering academia includes time in R&D at Bolt Beranek and Newman, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center and Sun Microsystems Laboratories.
