Star Running Back Arian Foster’s Investments Off-Field Paying Dividends On-Field
HOUSTON, TX (PRWEB) April 21, 2016 -- In a recent interview with Yahoo Sports, all-Pro star running back Arian Foster recently credited his quick recovery from a ruptured Achilles tendon to an unlikely source: PreHab. After Foster’s October injury, he was approached by Silicon Valley startup PeerWell a health technology company pioneering recovery improvement from surgery and specializing in a revolutionary pre-surgery treatment program called PreHab. PreHab consists of personalized diet and exercise plans, mindfulness based pain management training and a host of other activities that comprise a pre-surgery program designed to provide the body with the building-blocks it needs to repair itself as efficiently as possible.
PeerWell provided Foster with access to surgical and medical experts within their network, connected him with other athletes who faced the same surgery, provided him a nutrition program and even developed a pre-op skin cleansing routine to minimize wound infection risk.
After only five months, Foster returned to training and has started visiting with NFL teams. “I’ve had 14 surgeries over the course of my career,” said Foster. “I thought I had tried everything, but when PeerWell approached me with their PreHab program, it just made a lot of sense and has made this the most successful recovery of my career.”
Foster’s success with PreHab inspired him to become an investor in the company. Foster stated, “The reason I wanted to invest in this company was to bring medical care that elite athletes have access to, to the masses. There are 50 million surgeries a year and PreHab could help each one – whether you're an athlete or someone having a routine hip or knee replacement.”
The concept of pre-operative preparation has a strong clinical pedigree. According to Science Daily, a 4,733 patient study showed that the use of pre-operative physical therapy, prior to a total joint replacement, was associated with a 29% reduction in the need for rehab services.
Peerwell’s PreHab program has gotten the attention of star athletes and industry veterans alike, including Charlene Frizzera, former acting administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and a PeerWell investor. As Frizzera explains, “PeerWell's technology is uniquely positioned to deliver pre-operative care in a way that capitalizes on CMS’s recent roll out of bundled payments for total joint replacements. It's ability to improve outcomes without increasing clinical load makes it a perfect fit for today's over-taxed provider."
