John Paul the Great Catholic University Offering New B.A. in Humanities
Escondido, CA (PRWEB) December 02, 2016 -- John Paul the Great Catholic University is pleased to announce it has received approval from the WASC Senior College and University Commission for a new Bachelor of Arts in Humanities degree.
Prospective students are now welcome to apply to the program. Classes for the new degree will begin in September of 2017. The degree will initially have two areas of emphasis: “Theology & Philosophy” and “Creative Writing & Screenwriting.” The university will add a third emphasis in the fall of 2019, called “Politics, Philosophy & Economics.”
The Humanities degree is a broadly interdisciplinary program that will examine the human condition, art, culture, and ideas using the great works of Western Civilization. Students will develop their reading, writing, speaking, and analytical skills through the coursework. They will also tackle some of the big questions of life, such as: Who are we? What is our ultimate destiny? And, how should we relate God and neighbor?
The Creative Writing & Screenwriting emphasis will train students how to tell powerful stories for multiple mediums including screenplays, TV pilots, novels, or short stories. Students will learn how stories shape our culture by studying the greatest stories from poets, novelists, philosophers, and artists.
The Theology & Philosophy emphasis examines the relationship between faith and reason. Students will study the Sacred Scripture, the unity of the Old and New Testament, and the relationship between salvation history and the Church’s celebration of the Liturgy.
The Humanities program is launching under the direction of a new Distinguished Scholars advisory board. The board consists of prominent Catholic scholars representing the best of Catholic higher education in America. Dr. Derry Connolly, President of JPCatholic, says “Our mission here at JPCatholic is to impact the culture for Christ. To do that, you need to reach deep into the Catholic intellectual tradition and put it in conversation with the intellectual and artistic trends in our contemporary culture. This advisory board will help us ensure that JPCatholic graduates are prepared to impact the culture for Christ in a deep and lasting way.”
