National Merchants Association CEO, Top Executives Address Members of Congress at ETA’s Capitol Hill Fly-In
Temecula, California (PRWEB) September 20, 2017 -- National Merchants Association CEO Heather Petersen and members of the NMA executive team addressed Members of Congress and federal regulators on payments industry issues as part of the Electronic Transactions Association (ETA) Annual Capitol Hill Fly-in on Wednesday, Sept. 13.
NMA, a global merchant advocacy group and a leader in merchant services, joined more than 50 payments and technology industry leaders in meetings with representatives from the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau, Federal Reserve and Treasury.
The goal was to provide insight into how the payments industry drives the U.S. economy.
“We’re glad to join ETA and other industry leaders for our third consecutive Capitol Hill Fly-In,” Petersen said. “We’re here to advocate on behalf of our merchants and agents – and convey where we stand on important issues that impact their success and future. These fly-ins allow us to inform our elected representatives about what’s coming next in payments, and to stay on the forefront of any legislative changes being considered.”
The discussion included ETA’s stance on lowering the corporate tax rate, and a repatriation holiday to bring overseas earnings back to the U.S. Another issue under discussion was the ETA’s recommendation to create uniform data breach notification laws for all 50 states. With high-profile breaches in the news, the legislation to create a consistent national standard is now a hot topic in Congress.
“It’s important that we continue to demonstrate to our representatives in government that the payments industry is self-regulating effectively. We have proven year-in and year-out that we have the best interest of both consumers and businesses at heart,” Petersen said. “Of course, there will be always be challenges we need to address. But our ability to come together as an industry and correct those issues must be protected — so that we can continue to provide cost-effective solutions to the marketplace.”
Petersen also participated in a panel on international payments, addressing many issues that are top-of-mind with the public today such as privacy, cybersecurity, and how to implement consistent international standards to prevent money laundering and protect consumers.
Petersen is an ETA Certified Payments Professional (ETA CPP), and serves on ETA’s Government Relations Council as well as its Payments Sales and Strategy Committee. Also participating in the ETA Capitol Hill Fly-in from National Merchants Association were Chief Risk Officer Jacob Bennett, ETA CPP; and Chief Technology Officer Jason Holderness.
