Kamala Harris, the first woman, the first African American, and the first South Asian to hold the office of Attorney General of the State of California, will deliver remarks to the sold out crowd of nearly 600 people. California Supreme Justice, Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar, the first Latino immigrant appointed to the State’s highest court, will deliver the Keynote Address. MABA will also honor Sonia Mercardo, longtime MABA member and civil rights attorney; Los Angeles City Councilmember Gil Cedillo; Attorney and founding member of MABA Manuel Hidalgo; and Norma Nava and Misty Sanford of For People of Color Inc.
This year, MABA makes history as it will install Cindy Pánuco, of Norwalk, CA, as its 2015 President. Ms. Pánuco will be the 15th woman, in the organization’s 55 year history, to lead as its President. She is also the first woman civil rights, employment and human rights attorney ever elected to the post by its membership. MABA has traditionally been led by criminal law, and immigration practitioners. MABA’s President-elect, Maria Ramirez, is the first Latina to hold a position of Head Deputy in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
