Author Kathleen Keena Releases New Book, ‘Adolescent Depression’
East Windsor, CT (PRWEB) August 23, 2013 -- Successful therapist Kathleen Keena has penned her first book "Adolescent Depression: Outside/In" (published by iUniverse) that showcases her experiences as an adolescent and a therapist.
Keena interweaves first-person narrative with poetry and prose to share with the reader the experience of her depression-plagued adolescence and how she overcome it to eventually become an effective practitioner.
Depression, especially among teenagers, is often misdiagnosed and ignored. Shame and lack of understanding on the part of others often drive a person deeper into despair. In "Adolescent Depression," Keena portrays herself as two characters, one her anguished adolescent self and the other her adult self at the age of 50.
"Adolescent Depression" traces the several stages of depression in well-organized chapters. Keena hopes the book helps parents, adolescents and medical professionals gain a better understanding of the challenges faced by depressed adolescents.
An excerpt from "Adolescent Depression: Outside/In":
Depression should always be taken seriously. It can be, and is, deadly when a young person despairs of getting better. For all the underachievers staring out classroom windows, for all the distracted, lost young adults who find themselves fearing a compromised future, I urge you to believe that depression is treatable. A supportive circle of family or friends and counseling, education, and psychiatric attention are components of compassionate care. Recovery is possible. You deserve it.
