A unique study abroad alternative now offers students world-class skiing and snowboarding options. Winter at Westminster, a college exchange program at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah, has partnered with The Canyons Resort. The partnership allows Winter at Westminster students to participate in a wider variety of winter recreation activities.

SALT LAKE CITY (PRWEB) October 17, 2006 -- With more college students skiing and snowboarding across the country, Westminster College’s “Winter at Westminster” study abroad alternative has decided to partner with The Canyons Resort to offer students a wider variety of winter recreation activities. Winter at Westminster (W@W) is the ultimate winter semester for adrenaline junkies. It provides students who are looking for a college exchange program the chance to ski or ride 70+ days while earning 12-16 transferable college credits from one of the west's academic powerhouses. The program includes adventures at eight of Utah’s top resorts, backcountry touring, avalanche safety training, and Olympic Games experiences.

Nationally ranked, Westminster was recently named to the “Princeton Review's” list of "The Best 361 Colleges" for 2007 and one of America’s “367 most interesting schools” by “Kaplan/Newsweek.” Westminster is a short 30-minute drive to seven resorts, where students have unbelievable access to world-class skiing and snowboarding and world-renown backcountry touring. The Canyons alone offers Winter at Westminster students 3,700 acres of skiable terrain, 3,190 feet of vertical rise, and eight mountain peaks.

Winter at Westminster is much more than just riding Utah’s Greatest Snow on Earth®—this study abroad alternative challenges students academically and physically, taking them to the next level. Students can choose from over 525 classes taught by dedicated faculty in a unique learning environment, pursue outdoor industry internship opportunities and network with leading industry professionals.

In developing the study abroad alternative, Westminster partnered with Ski Utah, leaders in the outdoor recreation industry, area resorts and even several former Olympians. In addition to the recreation and academic experiences, the Winter at Westminster program also includes a lecture series with ski/snowboarding industry leaders.

The total cost for the program, which includes one semester of tuition and fees at Westminster, room and board in on-campus housing and the activity fee for the Winter at Westminster program, is $16,544, well below the average tuition for a single semester at many private institutions.

According to Meagan Thornton, a former Winter at Westminster participant and student at Occidental College, "Winter at Westminster was unreal. If you told me earlier this year that I would be spending a semester in Utah, riding fresh powder, weekend camping in a yurt, trying Nordic jumping and backcountry skiing – I wouldn't have believed you. This experience has been incredible!"

Westminster College, founded in 1875, is a private, comprehensive, liberal arts college dedicated to students and their learning. Impassioned teaching and active learning are the hallmarks of the Westminster experience. The college prepares its students for success through a strong foundation of liberal education combined with cutting-edge professional programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Located where the magnificent Rocky Mountains meet the vibrant city of Salt Lake, Westminster blends classroom learning with experiences presented by its unique location to help students develop skills and attributes critical for success in a rapidly changing world. U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks Westminster in the top tier of regional colleges and universities in the West, and as an excellent educational value. Additionally, the college was named to the Princeton Review's "The Best 361 Colleges" for 2007.

Students interested in earning college credits while skiing and snowboarding should visit www.westminstercollege.edu/snow for more information on the Winter at Westminster study abroad alternative.
