A very human mother and her maybe not-so-very-human daughter and grandson try their best to live normal lives in a rapidly changing world that is anything but normal
CINCINNATI, Aug. 3, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- A stunning 98% of human DNA has no known purpose. It is evolutionary detritus. What if some of that silent DNA was suddenly not silent? Carolyn Buffington answers this question with the release of her debut novel, "The Shift: A Work of Fiction with a Sprinkling of Evolutionary Science" (published by Archway Publishing).
Set against the backdrop of a continuing COVID-19 pandemic, a once-in-a-millennium drought, a divisive culture, and a society reliant on misinformation from social media, this novel follows the story of a very human mother and her maybe not-so-very-human daughter and grandson as they try their best to live normal lives in a rapidly changing world that is anything but normal.
"In this novel, I wanted to explore how fear shapes society's reaction to a change of epic proportions. I also wanted to explore how a handful of individuals, particularly mothers, might react to such a change that was embodied within their children," Buffington says. She adds, "Although this is technically a science-fiction book, it will also appeal to readers who do not usually read science fiction. The biology behind the storyline is simply explained, fascinating, and sometimes incredible, but true."
When asked what she wants readers to take away from the book, Buffington answered, "I want readers who did not like Biology in school to find the subject to be a bit more interesting. I also want readers to realize that all species, including humans, are constantly evolving. Exactly what our species will evolve into remains to be seen, but one thing is sure, if we fail to evolve, we will become extinct."
