Monster Energy’s Tyron Woodley Wins Rematch Against Stephen Thompson at UFC 209 by Majority Decision
Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) March 06, 2017 -- Monster Energy’s Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley defended his welterweight title after fighting to a majority decision in a closely contested rematch against Stephen Thompson at UFC 209 inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV.
At UFC 205 Welterweight champion Woodley came razor close to a knockout victory, and then moments from a choke against Thompson had to settle for a majority draw while narrowly retaining his title. Woodley and Thompson didn’t provide a lot of action over the first two rounds of UFC 209, as neither of these two counter strikers were ready to throw first, lest they be exposed to a hard counter strike or counter KO, until Woodley was finally able to pull the trigger and use his athleticism to power for a take down against Thompson in the third round. While Woodley (17-3-1) didn’t deliver a lot of damage, he did effectively control Thompson for much of the third from top position winning the round decisively.
An uneventful fourth round followed with Thompson, possibly unnerved by the constant threat of a takedown showing Woodley the utmost respect and never unleashing his trademark striking volume or rhythm. With the fight up in the air, an invigorated Woodley listened to his corner and finally showed some urgency, if not some much-needed reckless abandon, pressuring Thompson hard throughout the fifth round, finally landing a massive blow that floored Thompson. Woodley swarmed, landing vicious strikes and dropped him again just as Thompson scrambled to get up against the Octagon.
Big John McCarthy was taking a hard look at the action, and it appeared the Woodley stoppage against Thompson this time would happen. And much like their first meeting at UFC 205 Thompson showcased his toughness and resiliency as he regained his footing and movement just before the bell signaling the end of the fifth rang. When it was all said and done, Woodley defended his Belt with a majority decision of 48-47, 47-47, 48-47.
“I thought I was going to finish him, but in the end I got the victory,” said Woodley. “Nothing was surprising.”
