Published book shares the story of Frank Bonifas' wrenching childhood and the determination he had to overcome the odds of living with a misunderstood disorder
CELINA, Ohio, July 12, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- According to the Tourette Syndrome Foundation, the disorder is defined by multiple motor and vocal tics lasting for more than one year. The verbal tics can include grunting, throat clearing, shouting and barking. It was named after a French neuropsychiatrist, Gilles de la Tourette, who assessed the disorder in the late 1800s. But it was not until the 1970s that it was widely recognized in the U.S., where it was thought to be exceptionally rare.
A devoted Catholic and former altar boy, Frank Bonifas inherited Tourette syndrome before the disease was recognized in the United States and spent a large part of his life not knowing why his violent tics, obsessions, and learning disabilities were present. After many admissions to hospitals where he was treated as a psych patient, he was finally admitted to New York Hospital and diagnosed with the disease.
Bonifas wants to spread awareness of Tourette syndrome and offer encouragement to anyone afflicted with it and it is for these reasons, he releases his memoir, "Fu-Fu-Fu-Frank! One man's struggle with Tourette Syndrome" (published by AuthorHouse in October 2010). Set for a new marketing campaign for 2023, this book shares the story of his wrenching childhood and the determination he had to overcome the odds of living with a misunderstood disorder. Though far from cured, he was able to function, and eventually to interact with people. He graduated from high school, his circle of friends widened and his world opened up.
Through this book, Bonifas relives some of his experiences and explains that he would probably have committed suicide if he had not believed such an action would condemn him to hell for all eternity. Readers will laugh and cry as they read his story, and obtain a better understanding of Tourette syndrome or anyone afflicted with similar disorders.
"Tourette syndrome is more known to society today and there are more persons who have this syndrome and can be helped with the right medicine and the medical care," Bonifas says. When asked what he wants readers to take away from the book, he answered, "In every bad condition of your life, there is hope at the end of the tunnel and there are people who cares. I have tried to put my past behind me. I have a lot of faith and a lot of determination."
