Gannett Fleming Florida Bridge Design Project Recognized by Design-Build Industry
Osceola County, Florida (PRWEB) October 24, 2013 -- Designed by Gannett Fleming and built by The Lane Construction Corporation, the Interstate 4 (I-4) Bridges Spanning Reedy Creek in Osceola County, Fla., has been recognized by the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA™) Florida Region as the state’s Design-Build Project of the Year in the Transportation Category.
As part of its 2013 Design-Build Awards competition, DBIA™ Florida selected the I-4 Bridges Spanning Reedy Creek project after rigorous judging by a panel of project owners and DBIA™ professionals. The project was evaluated on various criteria, including design-build best practices; design and quality; sustainability; safety; schedule; and cost performance.
The I-4 Bridges Spanning Reedy Creek project was undertaken by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 5 as a result of inspections that revealed the twin bridges to be scour critical. One of the primary causes of bridge failure in the U.S., scour is the erosion around bridge pier and abutment foundations caused by flowing water.
The Lane Construction/Gannett Fleming design-build team provided the final design and built a supplemental substructure system for the bridges. Gannett Fleming’s design solution called for crutch bents at all intermediate bent locations to transfer load paths to new and deeper foundations. The design minimized traffic disruptions and environmental impacts. It allowed the project to be completed at a significantly reduced cost and on an accelerated schedule.
DBIA™ is an organization committed to promoting and supporting the design-build project delivery method. It is regarded as the industry’s preeminent resource for leadership, education, objective expertise, and best practices for the integrated delivery of capital projects.
