“Art In Recycling” Exhibit Opens at Boston Children’s Museum
Boston, Ma (PRWEB) December 04, 2013 -- Everyday, each of us puts countless items in trash and recycling bins. How often do we take things out and reuse them? How often do we see art in these ordinary objects? For artist Fay Chandler, that answer is all the time. In her hands, wood, wax, bottles, spools and more are transformed into quirky characters and charming scenes. These figurative sculptures will be featured in the new exhibit “Art in Recycling” opening December 14 at Boston Children’s Museum.
Although Chandler is better known as a painter, her sculptural work came about as a happy accident from her paintings. In 1977, she began to spray paint over “junk” on her canvases but then began to turn those objects into art of its own. “I found pieces of wood or junk that could stand alone or be joined together to make freestanding objects,” Chandler says. The found-object sculptures range in size from tall to small but all showcase a playful charm that is well suited to the diverse audience, also tall and small, here at Boston Children’s Museum.
In fact, this will be Chandler’s second show at the Museum. Her found-object sculptures were first displayed in 1996, back when the Museum’s Recycle Shop was a major attraction. Chandler herself would sort through bins and stock up on materials and supplies to take back to her studio. In honor of this legacy, a “pop-up” recycle shop will be open between December 22 – 31 for visitors to collect their own found materials and make something new. Museum visitors are invited to take a look at these unique works of art and to see the materials that originally made up the pieces. Perhaps they will come away with a whole new idea of what really belongs in the trash and recycling bins.

Hours and Admission
The Museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Fridays until 9:00 p.m. Adults $14, children (1-15) and senior citizens, $14; children under 12 months and Museum members are always free. Fridays 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., all visitors $1
