America's Biggest Rib Cook-Off Expected to Draw 500,000 People over Labor Day Weekend
Reno/Sparks, NV (PRWEB) August 28, 2013 -- Twenty-four of America’s most decorated and talented rib cookers are at the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off in Sparks, Nevada, to compete for the title of “Best in the West” – a designation many cookers consider to be the ultimate prize in high-volume competitive barbecue. In addition to bragging rights, the cookers compete for a total cash purse of $14,500 at America’s biggest rib cook-off, held every extended Labor Day weekend. More than 500,000 visitors and 233,400 pounds of ribs were served in 2012 at the six-day event.
The 25th annual Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off will run Wednesday, August 28, through Monday, September 2, 2013 at John Ascuaga’s Nugget Casino Resort. This must-attend culinary, music and craft festival is open 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Admission is free!
The event starts on Wednesday, August 28, and the opening day features the Nugget World Rib Eating Championship – a 12-minute, all-you-can-eat competition, featuring Major League Eaters including Joey Chestnut.
The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off also brings in top-notch entertainment, rides and a carnival area, and, of course, the best BBQ in the country. The rib cook-off draws thousands of people to Victorian Square in Sparks, Nevada every extended Labor Day weekend.
In 2012, Chicago BBQ Company, from Burr Ridge, IL, took home the title of “Best in the West,” their first time winning the grand prize after 24 years at the invitation-only event. Second place went to Sweet Baby Ray’s; Famous Dave’s took third place; Porky ‘N’ Beans took fourth place; Checkered Pig took fifth place. Another top honor - the 2012 People’s Choice Award was given to Back Forty Texas Barbecue.
The winners of 2013’s competition will be announced on Monday, September 2, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the West End Stage.
