Yaz and Yasmin are oral contraceptives that are made with drospirenone, a synthetic form of progestin. In April 2012, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warned that birth control pills containing drospirenone had been linked to an increased risk of blood clots. At that time, the labels for Yaz, Yasmin and similar birth control pills were updated to include information regarding epidemiologic studies that reported as high as a three-fold increase in the risk of blood clots for drospirenone-containing products when compared to oral contraceptives that contained other forms of progestin.

According to court documents, more than 11,000 product liability claims have been filed in U.S. District Court, Southern District of Illinois on behalf of alleged victims of Yaz and Yasmin side effects.
