Industry Veteran Nick Maounis Headlines Ivy Family Office Network Newport Beach, CA Forum
Newport Beach, CA (PRWEB) September 26, 2013 -- Nick Maounis of Verition Fund Management headlined the Ivy Family Office Newport Beach, CA Trends in Family Offices Forum with a discussion on “The Post 2008 Multi-Strategy Hedge Fund.” The Forum was held on September 12th in Newport Beach, CA.
According to Mr. Maounis, “The post-2008 environment has created a robust opportunity set for multi-strategy hedge fund managers. Investors previously focused on fund of fund managers are now looking to multi-strategy firms for less directional strategies within more appealing fee structures. Additionally, more and more firms are learning to appreciate the benefits of collaboration among portfolio managers across asset classes. While historically most multi-strategy funds have run their businesses as independent siloes, opportunities for cross-pollination of ideas between the different trading groups have never been stronger.”
Several of the larger players are outgrowing the capacity of many of their core strategies rendering them unable to provide the same level of consistent returns they once could. Drawing upon his past experiences, Mr. Maounis has built Verition as a boutique hedge fund, targeting just $750 million in assets. This smaller size allows Verition to focus on capacity-constrained strategies with higher Sharpe ratios typically inaccessible to large hedge funds. Further, it affords Mr. Maounis the ability to react to market shifts on a real time basis and dynamically size allocations across asset classes.
Verition has a five year track record of consistent outperformance, annualizing at approximately 13% with volatility below 8%. The fund has performed particularly well in difficult market environments, posting a 20% gain in 2008.
Mr. Maounis oversees the day-to-day investment activities of Verition, including the allocation of capital across strategies. Previously, he was the founder of Amaranth Advisors and a portfolio manager at both Paloma Partners and Angelo Gordon & Company.
