Located just 40 minutes from the heart of Asheville in Western North Carolina, the 4,400- acre community is in high spirits and are happy to share what's happening. In case you didn't know, 75% or more than 3,400 acres of the entire community is preserved in its natural state, and residents have the privilege of enjoying it 24/7. Retirees can enjoy walking through the Balsam Mountain Preserve's excellent hiking trails and can appreciate the protected wildlife and foliage in a park-like setting at this private community. Dramatic long range mountain views from the hiking trails and select properties are the icing on the cake for people who cannot get enough of the perfect scenery on the trails.
For those who love to hike, Balsam Mountain Preserve is the place to live. In fact, just recently one of the most popular Balsam Mountain Preserve hiking trails received a “spring cleaning” from the members of the community. Residents and the maintenance crew removed the leaf litter which made the trails slippery for hikers in several places. The new handrails replaced the old rotten ones, and portions of the trail were mulched to make a more leveled hiking surface. Residents living in the Balsam Mountain Preserve homes are thrilled with the outdoor renovations and can see the spring wildflowers bloom in style.

While current residents are busy smelling the flowers, new members of the community are building the homes of their dreams at this very moment. Five new homes are currently in construction and one of them is under HRC Review. Since 2009, there has been a dramatic increase of new home construction projects within Balsam Mountain Preserve. Western North Carolina gated golf communities have been feeling the effects and Baby Boomers are looking to well-known architects like Moss Creek and Rob Carlton to build their mountainside manors this year.
After building their perfect paradise, the private community keeps club members busy year round. This spring, members enjoyed the Mardi Gras Party on March 7, 2014 and the St. Patrick’s Day celebration on March 14, 2014. The Mardi Gras Party was decked out in all colors of the rainbow, and members partied like they were living in the historic French Quarter – complete with feathered masks and sparking beads! St. Patrick’s Day was followed with traditional Irish Buffet and a social hour before everyone dines on soda bread, corned beef and cabbage made by the New Executive Chef.
Kaelyn Singleton, the New Executive Chef at The Boarding House at Balsam Mountain Preserve started with a bang in January. As a native of Waynesville, North Carolina, Singleton is showing her support for local products and promotes “farm to table” cooking. With her numerous wedding cake awards and impressive experience from The Swag Country Inn, Waynesville Country Club and The Gateway Club, Singleton is winning over the residents of the Balsam Mountain Preserve homes with little effort. Come try her delicious desserts and masterful meals after touring the neighborhood.
Balsam Mountain Preserve is one of the leading Western North Carolina gated golf communities in the area. For those that want a pristine playground for golfing, the community is performing Aerification procedures to reduce the amount of thatch on the course. From April 15th-17th, the course will be closed for the crew to remove the cores or plugs in the golf course. The procedure conditions the soil and leaves a well-groomed playing area for community members.
Beginning April 4, 2014, the community opens the golf course for the season, and kicks off with a Masters Match-Up Tournament on April 12th. The year will continue with a Memorial Day Scramble and an annual Flag Day Tournament. On the select days of May 24th and July 5th, members can bring a guest from dawn until dusk to practice their swing and show off on the golf course! The season wraps up October 11th, 2014, and retirees can say good-bye to spring and summer, and “hello” to autumn and winter at Balsam Mountain Preserve.
