YMCA of Greenwich’s Water Polo Teams Dominate at Junior Olympic Qualifier Tournament
Greenwich, CN (PRWEB) June 11, 2014 -- The YMCA of Greenwich's Water Polo teams recently participated in a North East Zone Junior Olympic Qualifier tournament at Chelsea Piers in Stamford, Conn.
The YMCA dominated the competition by securing eight spots at the National Junior Olympics in Palo Alto, CA from July 26 – August 3, more teams than any other club in the Northeast. Out of the six age-groups, Greenwich secured the #1 spot in four age-groups (12U Girls, 12U Boys, 14U Girls, 16U Boys). Overall, the YMCA Greenwich Aquatic team went 19-3.
Head Coach Ulmis Iordache said ,”The most exciting part of the tournament was when our two 12U Boys teams and two 16U Boys teams beat all their competition securing the 1st and 2nd spots at the National Junior Olympics. To not only have the best team in the Northeast but also have the 2nd best team in the same age-group, shows how strong and dedicated our athletes are.”
The YMCA’s 14U girls and 16U girls continued their winning streak as well and secured the top spots at the Junior Olympics.
The 14U boys had tough first game loss against Navy, however, they were able to come back and win the rest of their games, including a significant win against Chelsea Piers to secure a spot in the top Championship division (top 48 teams in the United States vs the bottom 48 teams in the United States in the Classic division) at the National Junior Olympics.
Kim Tierney Wang, YMCA Water Polo Director said: “I am really proud of all our players, they did an amazing job. The competition this weekend was tough, but our players persevered by securing all eight teams in the top Championship bracket of the National Junior Olympics – something that no other Northeast team did. Our program is continuing to draw national attention. There were quite a few coaches from top water polo colleges there watching our players.”
