Utah Academy for Struggling Teens Utilizes Equine Therapy
Hurricane, UT (PRWEB) October 03, 2014 -- Utah’s premier therapeutic boarding school,Diamond Ranch Academy (DRA), has implemented equine therapy in their efforts to heal troubled youth. Center representatives have noted that the innovative therapy has helped students learn to connect with trainers and the animals while building equestrian skill. The skills they develop through this therapy transfer to the development of life skills in relationship building, goal setting, and establishing drive in achieving success.
“The kids are loving the center!” noted Sherri Dias, COO at Diamond Ranch Academy. “It’s really been a hit on campus. Students have been more motivated to work hard in the classroom to earn opportunities to visit the horses.”
The center spans across 220 by 110ft of the Academy’s campus. It features an indoor and outdoor arena, stable space for 20 horses, and skylights for night time rides. The center currently holds 10 horses for student therapy session use. The grounds are fully landscaped and include a fire pit and a tac shed full of riding gear to keep students safe and well-equipped during therapeutic sessions.
Equine Therapy Explained
Equine therapy has proven effective in treating a wide range of psychological health issues. Experts in mental health have noted that equine therapy is an incredible tool for working with children and teens suffering from a variety of attachment disorders including aggression, anxiety, and depression. Its effectiveness with these disorders can be greatly attributed to the therapy’s ability to help patients learn to better manage emotions and set relationship boundaries through working closely with animals and trainers.
