Dr. Adam Spector Offers Advice on Ensuring the Perfect Fit for Orthotics
Washington, DC (PRWEB) November 30, 2015 -- Foot and Ankle Specialists of the Mid-Atlantic, LLC ("FASMA") podiatrist Adam K. Spector, DPM (Wheaton and Shady Grove Divisions) was recently featured in Podiatry Today, an “award-winning, premier publication that emphasizes informative clinical features and columns as well as practice management articles.” Dr. Spector is featured as an expert panelist in an article titled “Ensuring Patients Get a Perfect Orthotic Fit” in the Volume 28, Issue 10 edition of the publication. In the article, Dr. Spector walks the reader through the entire orthotic process, from evaluating the patient to fitting the finished orthotics in shoes. He first discusses the extensive methods he uses when assessing the patient's needs, including static/non-weightbearing exams, weightbearing/standing exams, walking and running gait, limb length discrepancies, stride length, cadence, posture, pressure points, and the weight of the patient. Once all the measurements are gathered, a prescription is sent to the lab to create the perfect orthotic for the individual. “If the lab followed my prescription precisely and utilized our old-school, more reliable plaster cast properly, then the orthotic should fit, feel and function well,” says Dr. Spector. After they are created, the orthotics are then further evaluated on how it fits in the patient’s shoes. “A common reason for orthotics not being effective is not fully considering how they will fit and function in our patient’s shoes. Communication with the lab is also vital and it is sometimes necessary to send photos of the patient’s foot or shoes, or even send the shoes themselves, to meet this goal.”
Dr. Adam K. Spector practices in the FASMA Wheaton and Shady Grove offices. He is also an avid runner and conducts bimonthly multispecialty running clinics.
