Jack Walker's new book "The Journey is the Goal" is about a boy-child's journey to man-child whose start in life began in Virginia during the Great Depression
Recent release "The Journey is the Goal" from Page Publishing author Jack Walker starts in Colorado, where for the first ten years of the author's life he was raised by his maternal grandparents, with stop-offs from time to time with foster parent friends of his mother.
VALPARAISO, Ind., July 26, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Jack Walker, a veteran who put himself through school and worked in the public sector until his retirement, has completed his new book "The Journey is the Goal": a gripping account of the author's journey from living in poverty with little education, to having a successful and prosperous professional life.
According to Walker, "(I) dropped out of high school in (my) sophomore year and took jobs from the oil fields of Wyoming to a fishing boat in California. Even though a high school drop-out, (I) achieved a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Colorado College on the GI bill. (I) served on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier during the Korean war. Following the war and graduation, along with (my) pregnant wife and three children (I) moved to Chicago where (I) became the only white officer in a predominately black labor union during the civil rights turbulence of the 60's. (I) did graduate research at Roosevelt University for the book: "Roles of the Labor Leader." And later taught in the University's labor Education Division while attending night classes at Chicago Kent College of Law. The 70's were spent as a civil rights investigator for the Office for Civil Rights, U. S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. (I have) been homeless in the bitter Wyoming winter and (I have) lived on Chicago's north lake shore in a luxury apartment while driving a Jaguar. I've been rich and I've been poor-rich is better."
Published by New York City-based Page Publishing, Jack Walker's incredible account of his life, including how he was placed in a home for needy children during the war years, 1942–1945, tells a tale of perseverance.
The author left the home in 1946 at age 15 and journeyed the difficult teen years as a high school dropout taking jobs ranging from the work camps of the forest service to the oil fields of Wyoming and the fishing boats of California. His feelings, thoughts, and actions along the way are those of a boy—some dumb, some silly, and some maybe even profound. He knew cruel and frozen homelessness and hunger firsthand, as well as the kindness of strangers.
The reader will meet the mentors who helped shape the author's life: the loving and caring grandmother, the hard-as-nails grandfather, the nineteen-year-old seductress, the pool shark instructor, the crap shooters, the ex-GIs, some tough guys, some delicate guys, some good girls, some bad girls, and some people dumb as a rock and some smart as a whip. They all contributed to who the author became.
Readers who wish to experience this intriguing work can purchase "The Journey is the Goal" at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes store, Amazon, Google Play or Barnes and Noble.
