DETROIT, March 11, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- For the past seven years, top-ranking Michigan personal injury trial lawyers Christensen Law have sponsored their Distracted Driving Awareness Scholarship Competition in an ongoing effort to prevent drunk, distracted, and impaired driving.
In the run-up to this year's competition, the expectation was that the pandemic lockdowns may have impacted the statistics in a positive way, but that does not seem to be the case. Indeed, despite the dramatically lower number of drivers on the road and miles driven in the United States due to COVID-19, fatalities in Michigan jumped 11% higher in 2021, a rise from even the elevated 2020 statistics. 38 states overall saw increases in traffic deaths, largely due to driver behavior. Michigan and the Midwest region ranked in the top five areas in the nation to see a rise in accident-related fatalities.
Distraction (texting, streaming, etc.), drinking, and impairment continue to be major contributors to fatalities on the road. Younger drivers especially are the most likely to text and drive, with a large and growing percentage of fatal accidents caused by drivers in their twenties who are distracted while driving. "The fact that these numbers continue to rise is of grave concern," says founder David Christensen, "and it is ever more important to reinforce the message to our younger drivers about the dangers of impaired, distracted, and drunk driving." That's why the firm continues to encourage awareness through its annual scholarship program. Available to any college student in the United States (or high school senior about to enter college), the selected winner will receive a $1,500 scholarship grant.
In a first, the firm is hosting last year's video contest winner, a first-year student at Wichita State University, Josef Hobson. "We're bringing Joe and his father to Detroit to help launch the contest," says Managing Partner Sarah Stempky-Kime. He'll meet everyone, work with the marketing team, tour the city, and develop a short film of his own about Christensen Law. "As Joe is a film student, we wanted to offer him the chance to build a portfolio piece. We were all so impressed with his video submission last year; we want to support his growth and dedication to his career."
This year, applicants have three options to get their message across: they can select either an original short 60-second video, a written essay, or a static graphic that will serve as a public service announcement aimed at an audience of their age peers. Submissions will be accepted through June 10, 2022, and the winner will be announced on June 24th.
