Golden Mountains takes partly place in 1990 in The Netherlands and partly in 1907 in Rhyolite. The main character is Caroline who lives in Almere, a fast-growing city in The Netherlands. She earns very little and craves to have more money. One day she finds herself back in the booming city of Rhyolite in 1907 during the gold rush. Caroline is a woman of standing there and befriends a young prostitute. This friendship changes both their lives. Until a high-profile murder is committed…

Marcel Beijer is a Dutch journalist and writer. Golden Mountains is his second novel and the first one to be published in English. He visited the ghost town of Rhyolite several times and became fascinated by the rise and fall of the town that once housed more than 8,000 people. In the book he brings back to life the lost city and its inhabitants in a true and historical correct story. Later they return as ghosts.
