OceanGate Expeditions charters former Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker.
ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland, April 5, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- As we near the 111th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, OceanGate Expeditions confirms plans to return to the Titanic in 2023 for the third consecutive year. OceanGate Expeditions has signed a charter contract with Horizon Maritime and Miawpukek Horizon Marine Services for MV Polar Prince, previously operated by the Canadian Coast Guard as the icebreaker Sir Humphrey Gilbert. The ship has a long-running history of clearing ice from harbors and guiding ships through ice-choked marine environments.
"For this year's Titanic Expedition, we are embarking a month earlier than we did in 2021 and 2022. May is still considered to be iceberg season in the North Atlantic where the shipwreck of the Titanic lies. With this in mind, having a capable ship specifically designed for working in the icy Arctic regions is going to be very valuable for our extended crew of scientists, Titanic experts, and Mission Specialists," explains Stockton Rush, President, OceanGate Expeditions.
"We are excited to have OceanGate Expeditions join us onboard our vessel, the Polar Prince (Oqwatnukewey Eleke'wi'ji'jit), this year as they continue to explore the Titanic wreck and expand upon the important scientific research, archeological and marine biodiversity work that began in 2021," says Mi'sel Joe, Miawpukek First Nation Chief.
"With the 2023 Titanic Expedition just over a month away, the excitement for another series of successful dives to the renowned shipwreck is growing. We learned so much during the 2021 and 2022 Titanic Expeditions and have identified new questions we want to answer with further studies of this unique deep sea artificial reef. The discovery of the Nargeolet-Fanning Ridge in 2022 also gives us a natural reef comparison to study. This is a biologically diverse and dense habitat that we look forward to continuing to research," says Dr. Steve W. Ross, Adjunct Research Professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington's Center for Marine Science and OceanGate Expeditions Chief Scientist.
Through financial support from OceanGate Foundation, a U.S. non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, a team of marine biologists, maritime archaeologists, and GIS mapping experts from around the globe will support the 2023 Titanic Expedition.
The 2023 Titanic Expedition will benefit from the support of a limited number of citizen explorers who join our crew as Mission Specialists during the expedition. Mission Specialists provide financial support for the missions and have the opportunity to dive to the important maritime heritage site to view the shipwreck that only a handful of people have ever directly observed. There are still a limited number of Mission Specialist roles available for the 2023 Titanic Expedition. Interested parties should reach out to OceanGate Expeditions directly to learn more.
