Beyond the Runway: Break Free NYFW Shines a Light on Mental Health and Recovery During National Recovery Month
NEW YORK (PRWEB) July 31, 2023 -- The fashion industry is known for its glamour and style, but it is not usually associated with social issues like mental health, substance use, and co-occurring disorders. That's why Break Free is breaking the mold with an immersive runway experience that combines art, design, fashion, and social awareness on the runway.
Taking place during New York Fashion Week on Monday, September 11th at 6 pm, the Break Free Designer Showcase will feature mental health and recovery activists, not only as models on the runway but as featured designers showcasing their collections. Through their designs, these activists will shine a light on the pressing issues of mental health, substance use, and co-occurring disorders within the fashion industry and beyond.
A majority of the proceeds from this showcase will go to the Break Free Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides scholarships to assist those seeking treatment for substance use disorders.
The Break Free Foundation believes that everyone who needs addiction recovery treatment should have access to it, regardless of their financial situation. The foundation provides scholarships to individuals seeking to enter into recovery to attend an inpatient and outpatient program at low to no cost to them. The Break Free Foundation is currently partnered with Recovery Centers of America, for rehabilitation services, and the Realization Center for outpatient services.
“It is an understatement to say that the fashion industry impacts how we as a society choose to present ourselves to the world and can influence how the wearer feels about themself,” said Alexandra Nyman, founder of the Break Free Foundation. “We will continue to raise our voices during New York Fashion Week in an effort to raise awareness about mental health, co-occurring disorders, and substance use disorders in the fashion industry. It is our hope that other designers will follow suit and will speak on their personal experiences with mental health and recovery.”
September is National Recovery Month, a month to celebrate those who have sought recovery from a substance use disorder, and encourages others to seek ways to enter into recovery. The showcase will be held in the Empire Ballroom at the iconic 230 Fifth located at 230 5th Ave NY, NY.
Break Free NYFW promises to be an immersive, thought-provoking, and inspirational runway experience that should not to be missed. Join us in breaking the mold and promoting awareness of mental health and substance use disorders within the fashion industry.
