Commercial crab fishing in Alaska has improved significantly, as has the number of applications sent to Vessel Documentation Online.
MISSOULA, Mont., March 6, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Vessel Documentation Online is a site that provides applications for Coast Guard boat registration, renewal, and other maritime services. The company has seen a rise in applications from the state of Alaska. This coincides with a record Alaskan crab haul. According to "The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute," which is a "public-private partnership between the State of Alaska and the Alaska seafood industry established to foster economic development of a renewable natural resource," this year's Alaska Tanner/bairdi crab quota is more than five million pounds.
Writing in "The Progressive Grocer," Theresa Peterson, the Fisheries Policy Director for the Alaska Marine Conservation Council states "last year, the available harvest in Kodiak (Alaska) was 1.1 million pounds, and 82 vessels easily caught the crab in eight days. This year, the quota is more than 5 million pounds and represents the latest harvest opportunity the gulf has seen in more than 20 years."
To legally participate in commercial fishing activity on the navigable waters of the United States or in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), vessels that measure five net tons or more must be registered with the United States Coast Guard. Vessel Documentation Online offers applications for that service among others. In addition to applications for Certificates of Documentation, Vessel Documentation Online provides access to other NVDC forms such as the Coast Guard Abstract of Title, Transfer/Exchange, the MARAD Small Vessel Waiver, and many others.
