Maritime Documentation Center Sees Surge in New Applications in Florida Thanks to Increased Shipping Activity
Congested US ports that led to supply chain issues led many importers to turn to Florida seaports in 2022. Industry reports suggest that trend will continue in 2023 and beyond.
LOS ANGELES, March 16, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Maritime Documentation Center is a site that provides applications for Coast Guard documentation renewal among other services. In the last two months, Florida applications have increased. This comes on the heels of a shipping boom throughout the state.
According to the "Florida Ports Council," a "Florida nonprofit corporation that serves as the professional association for Florida's fifteen public seaports and their management," cargo rates increased in 2022. A report from the "Florida Seaport Transportation and Economic Development Council" (FSTED) found that Florida's 16 seaports experienced a new record high of volume of cargo received during 2022, which is a six percent increase over 2021. Additionally, the report found the state to be well-positioned to gain an even larger market share over the next five years.
The Maritime Documentation Center saw an increase in applications from vessel owners in the state of Florida in 2022. The Center provides vessel documentation applications for vessels that measure more than five net tons, are wholly owned by American citizens, and will be utilized in commercial fishing or "Coastwise" trade. Coastwise trade consists of transporting people and/or merchandise on the navigable waters of the United States or the "Exclusive Economic Zone," EEZ.
"The shipping industry in Florida is becoming a perfect alternative to other congested US ports. It's so rewarding to see our clients be able to reap the benefits," said Jackson Smith, spokesperson for the Maritime Documentation Center, "We're privileged to be able to be able to provide solutions for easier access to the documentation that all commercial boats need in the state of Florida."
Other documentation available for application through the Maritime Documentation Center includes Abstracts of Title and Preferred Ship's Mortgages as well as documents to change a vessel's hailing port, name, managing owner, and more.
