Agilitas Energy's 5.3MW Solar Farm Goes Live in Islip New York
Masschusetts commercial solar developer Agilitas Energy announced commercial operation of two solar farms totaling 5.3 Mega Watts in the Town of Islip, New York on December 19, 2018.
ISLIP, N.Y., Jan. 08, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Two recently constructed solar farms totaling 5.3 Mega Watts in the Town of Islip, New York commenced full-scale commercial operation on December 19, 2018. The projects are developed and constructed by Agilitas Energy, a leading commercial solar developer headquartered in Massachusetts. This marks the completion of Agilitas Energy's first tranche of projects within its 15MW, 7-project Long Island portfolio. The remaining projects are under construction in the Town of Brookhaven.
Agilitas Energy is leasing the two closed landfills from the Town of Islip in Holbrook and Hauppauge for nearly $120,000 a year. The 39-acre Holbrook landfill has been closed since the 1980s and now hosts the Town's recycling facility. The Blydenburgh landfill in Hauppauge was closed and capped in the 1990s as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Superfund program, which seeks to clean up hazardous sites.
The solar arrays are expected to generate over 7 million kWh of electricity annually, enough to power over 5,000 homes. The electricity generated from the solar arrays will be sold to PSEG Long Island, the transmission and distribution system operator of Long Island Power Authority, to provide clean energy for local residents under a 20-year power purchase agreement as part of the Feed-in-Tariff program.
"The Town of Islip is pleased to announce that our partnership with Agilitas Energy has transformed two closed Town landfills into green energy solar facilities, generating both clean power and an annual income for our taxpayers." Angie Carpenter, Supervisor for the Town of Islip commented, "It's a win-win for our Islip residents."
Agilitas Energy's Managing Partner Ken Rubin concurred with the Supervisor's view in saying that "Commencing Operations of these two Islip solar farms is a classic example of our 'triple win' strategy. The Town of Islip wins because they generate guaranteed income for 20 years from underutilized parcels of land. The energy consumer wins because we are lowering the cost energy. And, we all win because we are creating green energy that benefits our environment. We look forward to operating our 7 solar arrays in partnership with Islip and Brookhaven Long Island."
