LOS ANGELES, April 10, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Arch Mission Foundation announced today that Bill Nye and Vint Cerf have joined the advisory board of the non-profit. Their additions to the board come ahead of the placement of the first installment of the Lunar Library™ on the Moon aboard SpaceIL's Beresheet lander, scheduled to land on Thursday, April 11.
The Arch Mission Foundation is creating a solar system-wide Billion Year Archive that will serve as a backup to planet Earth. The Billion Year Archive consists of durable, long-term libraries that will be placed across the solar system and on Earth, ensuring that our culture, science, and civilization will be preserved for the distant future.
"I'm excited to welcome Bill and Vint to our advisory board," said Nova Spivack, co-founder of the Arch Mission Foundation. "Both have radically transformed the way we interact with and understand the world around us, and we expect this same visionary spirit to drive their work with the Arch Mission Foundation. Together, we will continue to inspire future generations of researchers, scientists, and creators to push the bounds of what we consider possible today."
Bill Nye, frequently known by his epithet, the "Science Guy" is a scientist, engineer, author, and inventor. In his work to encourage values of critical thinking, science, and reason, Nye has hosted award-winning shows, written multiple New York Times' Bestselling books, as well as led initiatives like the inaugural 2017 March for Science.
Nye is also the CEO of the Planetary Society, the world's largest and most influential non-profit space organization. In his role, he empowers the world's citizens to advance space science and exploration, a mission he will continue with the Arch Mission Foundation as humanity's knowledge spreads across the galaxy.
"I'm excited to serve as an advisor to this remarkable project," said Nye. "Along with its fundamental purpose, the safekeeping of human knowledge, the Lunar Library will serve to remind us all of the astonishing breadth of accomplishment of humankind. All that we've learned and imagined will be there for as long as there is a Moon and an Earth."
Vint Cerf, who is frequently referred to as one of the "Fathers of the Internet," has been awarded numerous awards for his co-invention of TCP/IP, including the National Medal of Technology, the Turing Award, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Cerf continues to work on helping improve the internet today, both in terms of accessibility and in terms of innovation. In his advisory role, Cerf will support the Arch Mission Foundation's plans to extend the Interplanetary Internet (IPN), announced in March.
Nye and Cerf will play key advisory roles in helping the non-profit develop future capabilities and partnerships to design, build, deliver, and maintain future Arch Libraries. The Arch Mission Foundation will be announcing an additional, high-profile advisor to their board in the coming weeks. More information on this addition will be released at a later date.
