Years later, I heard him sing together with the soprano Bidú Sayão and this paved the way to my total love and passion for opera. During her career Bidú Sayão was criticized by her fellow Brazilians for having taken certain decisions; they called her unpatriotic and doubter her love for her country, which caused her tremendous grief. These facts also contributed to my need to refute this criticism.
"Perhaps the most important and significant reason in taking on the challenge of writing a biography of Bidú is the fact that never before have her very personal feelings, sorrows, resentments, disappointments, anger and disillusions been revealed. She stated that she was not pleased with any biography about her and therefore decided to write her autobiography, but this never materialized.
"Finally, it was felt necessary to pay tribute to a very special lady who possessed magnificent human qualities and who through enormous effort and self-sacrifice, plus an uncontrollable passion and determination, became the famous international star she always wished to be."
