WASHINGTON, Dec. 8, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The influential Steven Schroeder Award for Outstanding Healthcare CEO was presented virtually at The Leapfrog Group's annual meeting. This year's recipient was Mr. Carl S. Armato, President and CEO of Novant Health in North Carolina.
The award was created by Costs of Care, a leading non-profit dedicated to curating and disseminating insights from the frontlines of health care to help delivery systems provide better care at lower cost, in conjunction with The Leapfrog Group, to recognize a hospital and/or health system CEO who has demonstrated courageous and ethical leadership addressing the twin issues of affordability and quality of health care in their community.
"Costs of Care believes that every health care CEO in the country should be focused tirelessly on patient safety and affordability. Health system leaders all face similar pressures and constraints, yet there are leaders like Carl Armato who are creating solutions to ensure patients receive safer and more affordable health care," said Chris Moriates, MD, Executive Director of Costs of Care.
Mr. Armato has led the way in fostering a culture that is accessible and equitable by removing barriers for those seeking care within the communities that Novant Health serves. Under his leadership, the health system has taken significant steps to provide fair and transparent billing and pricing practices through innovative payment models that alleviate concerns and confusion about the cost of care. Mr. Armato has also strengthened Novant Health's support for its most vulnerable communities by improving access to high-quality care through initiatives like its community health worker program, which helps address health disparities and socioeconomic determinants of health by connecting patients to important community resources and health education.
The Outstanding Healthcare CEO award is named in honor of Steven Schroeder, MD, Distinguished Professor of Health and Health Care at the University of California San Francisco and former President and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Dr. Schroeder has spent five decades inspiring and mentoring leaders to forcefully advocate for better quality and more affordable health care, and he has inspired leaders of both Costs of Care and The Leapfrog Group.
Dr. Schroeder said about this year's recipient, "In the face of pandemic-induced lost revenue by hospitals and medical systems, stewardship of medical resources requires visionary leadership and courage. That is why the programs led by Carl Armato of Novant Health are so important and worthy of celebration."
"Novant Health exists to improve the health of our communities, one person at a time," said Armato. "I am proud to receive this award on behalf of our health system for our continued commitment to removing barriers to care and improving health equity across all of our markets."
"Even in the midst of the pandemic, great health system leaders have sustained their commitment to providing high-quality, affordable health care to their community," said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. "With this award we're pleased to join with Costs of Care in recognizing a CEO who boldly faced the extraordinary circumstances of this year while simultaneously tackling patient safety, quality, and cost for patients."
