Studies Show Certain Vitamin Deficiencies Contribute to National Fatigue
HAUPPAUGHE, N.Y., Jan. 30, 2025 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- According to a recently published survey, 13% of US adults said they felt very tired or exhausted, and this national fatigue might be linked to not getting enough of three essential nutrients: Vitamin D, Vitamin B12 and Omega-3 Fatty Acids (1). However, consumers are often confused by dietary supplements choices, and uncertain what is and isn't necessary to maintain optimal health. To assist, Country Life® Vitamins, a pioneer in nutritional supplements, has curated a list of "must haves" for 2025.
As the study noted, Vitamin D deficiency may be a contributor to chronic fatigue, but it also leads the charge in other areas. Vitamin D is essential for building and maintaining healthy bones, and also regulates many other cellular functions in the body. Its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and neuroprotective properties support immune health, muscle function and brain cell activity (2).
Vitamin C is one nutrient that the human body can't synthesize, so supplementation is essential. Vitamin C is needed for growth and repair of tissues, helping to form collagen used to make skin, tendons, ligaments and blood vessels. It's also a powerful antioxidant that can block some of the damage caused by free radicals shown to contribute to cancer and other critical illnesses (3).
B Vitamins are critical to overall health as they are the key players in the metabolic process that helps convert food and drink into energy to keep the brain and body functioning optimally. Metabolism involves chemical changes that produce the energy cells need to grow, reproduce, repair, and stay healthy. It also helps eliminate toxins from the body. Eight essential nutrients in the B family cannot be produced through diet, so supplementation is key (4). Vitamin B has also been shown to reduce fatigue and boost mood.
Minerals are also essential to optimal health. Calcium is necessary for building and maintaining healthy bones, joints and teeth. Calcium is also helpful in supporting healthy brain and cardiovascular function (5).
Iron helps the body produce hemoglobin which carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. It also supports energy levels, aids brain health, and boosts immunity (6).
Magnesium is critical for a number of bodily functions. It supports muscle and nerve function, blood pressure regulation, blood sugar control, energy production, protein synthesis, bone density and DNA repair (7). Magnesium has also gained widespread accolades for helping with relaxation for more optimal sleep.
In addition to vitamins and minerals, Omega-3 Fatty Acids are key for optimal health. Omega-3's are needed to build cell membranes throughout the body and affect the function of the cell receptors. They can help prevent heart disease and stroke, may control lupus, eczema and rheumatoid arthritis, and may play protective roles in cancer and other conditions (8).
Finally, prebiotics and probiotics are essential for keeping the gut microbiome balanced, which plays an important role in digestion, metabolism, and overall well-being. By nourishing beneficial bacteria, prebiotics can help support vital functions in the body, to help promote health from the inside out. (9)
